The AquaKnights
In 2021 Tyler joined the AquaKnights in Oakley. He was nervous because this was one of the first sports where he and Spencer were not doing a sport one hundred percent together. It was sweet to see, as his big sister, his passion started to blossom. The practices nearly every day, and his having to really try hard was a priceless experience. Tyler had to hone his coordination skills, and he had to practice outside of practice hours. In his first season, he won the award of Rookie of the Year, which was an absolute honor. He grew a new love for what it meant to be a part of a team and to work hard to succeed.
He began to see the physical benefits of training with our dad at his gym. Lifting weights and practicing mobility and technique to improve his stride. His improvement in his swim was not unnoticed by his coaches. They offered support and encouragement every step of the way and are true role models to Tyler. After his diagnosis, they rallied the team together to support Tyler and got him set up for his next season on the team.
One big reason why swimming is so fundamental to Tyler is that when he is in the water, everything just makes sense. This was the sport that changed his life and offered him a slice of individual independence outside of Spencer— which is a big deal for twins. Even when he has radiation, Tyler still looks forward to getting in the water.
